Aliya Rota, CPA
Aliya is a third-generation member of an Alberta-based and family-owned real estate development company, Cameron Corporation.
She obtained a Bachelor of Commerce and a Certificate in Leadership from the University of Alberta in 2018, a Master of Professional Accounting from the University of Saskatchewan in 2020, and in 2022, received her Charted Professional Accountant (CPA) designation. During the first five years of her profession, she worked with a Big 4 audit firm and subsequently in her own family’s business in a corporate accounting role. She recently conducted a career pivot and is pursuing her interests in the realm of responsible and sustainable investing, working with a large investment manager in helping it carry out its responsible investment mandate.
As the eldest of twelve, third-generation family members (aged seven to twenty-seven), Aliya feels both responsible and empowered to ensure that the legacy built by the first and second generation lives onto and grows in her generation and beyond. To that regard, she has taken it upon herself to leverage and immerse herself in the abundance of opportunities in both the family business and NextGen education and development landscape, including attending the inaugural Scone Conference in 2016, the EY NextGen Academy at the Kellogg School of Management and the NEXUS Global Summit in 2018, and Families Summit of Minds (hosted by Family Enterprise Canada) in 2022.
Outside of her professional career and NextGen role, she sits on the board of the non-profit, Health Arts Society of Alberta, as well as leads the financial literacy initiative of an Edmonton-based volunteer society focused on providing financial education to vulnerable populations. Her passion for giving back was engrained in her from a young age where she witnessed the multitude of avenues through which her family gave back to the very community that offered and provided so much opportunity to them.
