John is a Principal with The Targeted Strategies Group and brings over 35 years of experience as a business leader and tax expert. In his years as a tax partner at Deloitte, he practiced in the areas of M&A, restructuring and estate planning for UHNW business owners. He now develops innovative strategies that incorporate life insurance to minimize and manage a variety of risks, minimize tax and optimize intergenerational wealth transfers.
At Deloitte, John held many leadership roles: Toronto TMT leader, National TMT Tax leader, Canadian Marketplace Tax leader, National Private Company Tax leader and Toronto Private Company Tax leader. He was also the Global Mid Market Tax Representative for Canada. He co-authored the Canadian best-selling book, “How to Reduce the Tax You Pay”, and co-edited the Canadian Tax Foundation book, “Taxation of Canadian Private Corporations and Their Shareholders”. Prior to joining Deloitte, John was CFO of a manufacturing company and owner of several small businesses.
John has a passion for the people side of business and has supported the personal development, client service and technical skills of many young professionals to help them succeed in their roles. He has lectured extensively and served on the Tax Course Committee with the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants (now CPA). His community involvement includes leadership roles at the United Way and volunteer roles on other boards. John earned a Bachelor of Business Administration from Wilfrid Laurier University and completed his Executive leadership training at Columbia University.
